If your green thumb is a bit brown these days, don’t give up hope. Cambria Pines Lodge and Cambria Nursery and Florist are hosting a two-day festival, Gathering of Gardeners, Oct. 16 –17. The festival, at the lodge and the nursery, will offer a wide array of presentations, as well as guest speakers. Nancy Caldwell, manager of the nursery, hopes the event will be as big a hit as it has been for a resort in Cottage Grove, Ore., owned by the same company that owns Cambria Pines Lodge.
“They don’t even have a nursery like we do, and several thousand people come for the festival every year,” said Caldwell. She’s hoping guest speakers and authors Rosalind Creasy and Renee Shepherd, as well as Australian-born horticulturist Robin Parer, will attract lots of festival-goers. Parer in particular may be of interest to individuals who live along the coast because he will speak on the planting and growing of pelargoniums and geraniums. According to Caldwell, geraniums are one of the flowers that do especially well in the coastal climates.
“Geraniums are a favorite flower along the coast — that’s why you see so many against the ocean,” she said. Prices for a single presentation at the event range from $6 for the cost of admission to hear one of the guest speakers to $59 for a hands-on learning experience painting botanical art. … Bike First, a program aimed at getting people to give up driving and opt for peddling, is set to begin with a recipient ceremony on Oct. 16 at Cambria Bicycle Outfitters in San Luis Obispo from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Twenty-three county residents, selected from among 80 applications, are purchasing a bike package valued at $1,200 for only $200. During the time they participate in the program, they will use an odometer to log the miles they bike going to work, to the grocery store, and other places. Mike Donovan, Rideshare program manager, hopes this program will become a model for other communities throughout the country.
